Grady Tate, 1ère Partie

1968, Nat Adderley se frotte à la pâte CTI, faite de soul-jazz aguicheur, d’arrangements grand-spectacle (ici sous la houlette de l’arrangeur et chef d’orchestre Bill Fischer). Sur You, Baby, la recette réussit beaucoup mieux que sur certaines autres productions CTI, sans doute en raison de la qualité des arrangements et de cette ambiance légèrement psychédélique et délicieusement poisseuse.

À noter l’utilisation du “Varitone electronic attachment” par le cornettiste.

Bon, là, il est possible que l’on soit en présence d’un exemple d’utilisation abusive des arguments commerciaux pratiqués par CTI : Reprise pop (Eleanor Rigby), jouée par une star plus ou moins consentante (Wes Montgomery), arrangements façon forteresse de chantilly (Don Sebesky à la baguette, qui n’a peur de rien), utilisation de congas.
Est-ce too much?

Plusieurs questions se posent à l’écoute de cette chansonnette :
Un musicien de jazz a-t-il le droit de faire impunément des reprises instrumentales des Beatles/Radiohead/Cindy Lauper (rayer la mention inutiles)?
Un arrangeur a-t-il le droit d’utiliser à la fois un orchestre ET des congas?
Le too too much est-il l’ennemi du Beau?

Chez Quincy Jones, pour une des merveilles de la discographie de l’arrangeur. Creed Taylor sait se donner les moyens : pourquoi choisir entre la pop, la soul, les big bands et les explorations psychédéliques quand on peut avoir les 4 en même temps? Casting de block-buster (Roland Kirk, Freddie Hubbard, Jerome Richardson, Jimmy Cleveland) et groove intergalactique. Le batteur de ce morceau est Grady Tate, mais il se partage le reste de la session avec Bernard « Pretty » Purdie.
