Batista’s Groove (du deuxième prénom de Marcus « Batista » Belgrave), avec trois des anciens élèves du trompettiste : Geri Allen, Kenny Garrett et Robert Hurst.

Groove Second Line de la New-Orleans, et duo d’anthologie entre Marcus Belgrave et Kenny Garrett.

Pour la petite histoire personnelle, j’ai découvert ce morceau grâce à Stéphane Decolly, au cours de « rythme oreille » de Jazz à Tours (la légendaire école de Jazz qui règne sans partage sur l’Ouest de la France, ses Cieux et ses Océans). On avait relevé le morceau ? comment est-ce possible ? à cette vitesse là ? Oh là là, on devait être doués, quand même.

On retrouve Marcus Belgrave aux côtés de Geri Allen, sur un album très récent en hommage à la ville de Détroit. Le Space Odyssey est devenu, semble-t-il, un morceau emblématique de la ville de Détroit, puisqu’il figure également sur la compilation the Detroit Experiment, ci-dessous. Cette version est en tout-cas époustouflante de classe.

The Detroit Experiment, un album mélant jazz et électronique produit par le DJ Carl Craig, avec pleins d’invités prestigieux (Bennie Maupin, Marcus Belgrave, Geri Allen, Regina Carter – tous originaires de Détroit). Les pistes les plus hype seront sans doute celles qui vieilliront le plus vite, mais cette version de Space Odyssey vaut largement le détour.
